Accessibility, Usability and Design
Accessibility Policy
It has been determined that this website needs to be as usable as possible, and at least minimally accessible to our patients with disabilities.
The use of the guidelines below will ensure that web documents created by UK HealthCare are developed to serve the largest possible audience. Compliance with these guidelines provides an added benefit to those users with text-based browsers, low-end processors, slow modem connections and/or no multimedia capabilities on their computer. It also allows for access by new technologies.
Accessibility Concerns
Our definition of minimal accessibility is based upon the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). WCAG defines three levels of checkpoint priority. UK HealthCare policy requires at least single-A WCAG compliance, which means all Priority one checkpoints are met. Additionally, UK HealthCare requires 508 compliance.
UK HealthCare will also strive to meet 75% of Priority 2, and 50% of Priority 3 guidelines. If possible, we will fix all items that do not destroy the functionality of the site.
Note that this is a goal of UK HealthCare and not necessarily implemented on all pages at this time. For insance, some screen reader software may not be able to access Adobe pdf files.
Usability Concerns
- Users will get a chance to give feedback, respond to surveys, and suggest new content in order to make the site more useful and user friendly.
- The site will use clear consistent navigation with use of conventional button names.
- The site will contain two search mechanisms (search box and explicit navigation bar)
- The site will contain clear, concise writing.
- Links will be descriptive, and file size for Portable Document Format files (PDFs) will be indicated.
- The visual hierarchy of each page will be clear for easy scanning of documents.
- Advertising will be minimal.
- Any animated gifs will be at a slow rate (1/2 sec. per change).
Design Concerns
The design team uses responsive design templates for consistency of pages.
- UK HealthCare uses Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for styles. No CSS document will contain the use of !important declarations, allowing for the proper use of user defined style sheets.
- UK HealthCare uses graphics sparingly to strive for a less than 10 second download time.
